What our customer have been saying....

What is a Fluxedo shirt?

A Fluxedo Shirt is a fun dress shirt with patterns and designs on the back that are only revealed when your tuxedo jacket is removed. The design remains hidden and you look like you are wearing a perfectly normal men’s dress shirt until you decide to take your jacket off.

Where did it come from? History of novelty dress shirts

The concept has been around for quite a while actually. Fancy dress shirts were particularly popular in the 70’s and often the shirts had the whole of the back panel and sleeve cover in a funky pattern or novelty design. Men could then turn up to the formal event looking like everyone else in their tuxedo suits and formal wear without causing a stir. It was not until the night was in full swing and people started hitting the dance floor that they chose to remove their jacket and impress the crowds with their fun-backed funky dress shirts.

What Type of shirt are they?

Fluxedo shirts are regular mens dress shirts with double cuffs, pleated fronts and winged collars.

Tuxedo shirt, formal shirt, dinner shirts, dress shirts - Whats the difference?

Here in Britain we refer to a ‘dress shirt’ as a more formal shirt worn at a black or white tie event. However in the states the term dress shirt is used as a more generic term for a buttoned shirt. In the UK there are officially 2 types of formal shirt, a formal day shirt  and a white dress shirt worn as evening wear.

Formal Day Shirts are worn with morning suits which generally consist of striped trousers, waistcoat and a tailcoat. They are actually worn on rare occasions these days and tend to be limited to use at weddings, some government or royal functions. They are only worn at the most prestigious of social events and despite what the name suggests they can be worn in the afternoon until about 5 o'clock. Morning dress shirts are either a high detachable wing collar worn with a single cuff shirt and complemented with a day cravat. The other type of morning dress shirt has a turndown collar and is worn with a standard neck tie.

The evening equivalent of a morning suit is the white or black tie and requires an evening formal shirt. These shirts are often starched or boiled to maintain their stiffness.

White tie dress shirts should all have a detachable wing collar and instead of buttons have shirt studs.

Black tie dress shirts however can be much more flexible and are most commonly worn to formal evening events in the UK. These shirts do not have to be starched which means that they can be marcella and/or have pleated fronts. The collar can either be an attached style collar or a winged style collar. It is these black tie shirts that are worn with a dinner jacket and trousers. We get the term ‘tuxedo’ from America and over in the UK we often refer to a dinner jacket as a tuxedo jacket or ‘tux’ for short. The name tuxedo shirt is often used to describe the black tie shirt as well.

The standard dress code for black tie is as follows:

  1. Black leather shoes with black socks - funky socks are always a good option though!

  2. A cummerbund and bow tie are optional but can often allow you to stand out that extra bit.

  3. A black self tie bow tie- but let’s be honest most people choose the pre tied option.

  4. A white dress shirt with a winged or turndown collar
